The energy consumption that is required when producing potato starch differs a lot from plastic. To produce polypropylene from virgin materials requires around 21 000 kWh/ton material, compared to the 200 kWh/ton needed to produce potato starch.
Another significant factor to compare is the carbon dioxide emissions. Potato production emits around 0.1 kg CO2e/ kg (from farming to supermarket), whereas polypropylene production emits around 2 kg CO2e/kg.
